On Tense and Copular Verbs in Nonverbal Predications in Sakha
نویسندگان
چکیده
It is well-known that in many languages copular verbs are not needed with nonverbal predicates when the clause is in present tense, but are needed in other tenses. Hebrew (Rapoport 1987), Arabic (Benmamoun 2000), Russian, and Turkish (Wetzer 1996: 52, Stassen 1997: 46, Baker 2003) are relatively familiar languages that fit this profile. A less familiar example is Sakha (also known as Yakut), a Turkic language spoken in Siberia. (1) shows that no copular/auxiliary verb is needed in the present tense in Sakha; rather, subject agreement attaches directly to the predicate regardless of its category. The same morpheme representing present tense and first person agreement features, -bit and its allomorphs, can attach to all three lexical categories (Vinokurova 2005):

The two be's of English
This qualitative study investigates the uses of be in Contemporary English. Based on this study, one easy claim and one more difficult claim are proposed. The easy claim is that the traditional distinction between be as a lexical verb and be as an auxiliary is faulty. In particular, 'copular-be', traditionally considered to be a lexical verb, is in fact a prototypi...

متن کاملSpecificational Copular Clauses as Inverted Predications with a Semantics of Equation
In this paper, we argue that specificational copular clauses are derived equations which are distinct from genuine equatives. While the latter has an equative copula, the former achieves a semantics of equation through type-shift. The account presented here not only allows us to maintain a predicate inversion analysis for specificational copular clauses but also explain when a predicate can be ...
